Sow To Grow Season 2 Episode 2

Our second workday of the season was a warm spring day and we worked hard. We actually broke out in a 😓 sweat! We decided to start some seeds with seeds donated to us. That way when we get our bed(s) ready we’ll have plants ready to go. We already started tomatoes and marigolds back in February! Today we started zucchini, peppers, onions, and watermelons!

The watermelons we planted in the ground because their roots are sensitive and don’t like to be transplanted. We did just one row of watermelons just for an experiment! At first glance it looks like we sowed them in red clay but the clay was only about 8 inches deep and at the bottom is regular sandy soil. I had already dug up a row of clay a few years ago for watermelons 🍉! Today I just dug up the weeds and grass and added more compost and topsoil before sowing the watermelon seeds! Let’s see how they turn out!

Donated seeds!

The rest of the seeds we sowed in our miniature greenhouses made from gallon water jugs. You make these by cutting the bottom of the jug about 2 inches high and making drainage holes at the bottom. A box cutter or scissors will do the job. Add compost or garden soil. Sow about 4 or 5 seeds spread out, water, and then put the top portion back on. I like to keep the original lid on until I see sprouts but if you see mildew forming, take the lid off. Place the jugs in a sunny spot and keep the soil moist. You can transplant when seedlings are 2 inches or higher and the second leaves 🍃 have sprouted. We placed our jugs around our watermelon 🍉 row so that the lawn care people won’t mow our watermelon plants this year!

Water jug green houses!!

It was great to have a water source close by and we would like to thank Century Townhall and Robert Tims for fixing the leak at the meter! We would also like to thank Bondurants for donating the water line accessories! Plus, we would like to thank Partain Farms for the seeds!

Water!! Sweet 💧 water!!
