We are Sisters

Many gardeners have heard of the ancient native American method called the Three Sisters. It’s a method that combines corn, squash, and beans in the same plot. The corn acts as a trellis, the beans add nitrogen to the soil, and the broad leaves of the squash suppresses weeds. We hope to try this method soon.

This season we will plant zucchini and yellow squash known as summer squash. Squash is the oldest known crop in the world, dating back 10, 000 years in South America. Everything is edible on the squash – of course the fruit, the leaves, the shoots, and the seeds. The seeds also have medicinal value. The ground sun-dried seeds were officially used for worms in humans in the 1800s to 1900s.

Medicine, emotional & physical therapy, nutrition, and heightened awareness & brain activity are the individual benefits of gardening. Add those to a community garden then we reap support, friendship, and sisterhood like the Three Sister method. #HopeGrowsInCentury
