Dark of the Moon

The weather is warm, very close to spring. Some are saying we’re in the false spring stage and we will have one more freeze before real spring. Either way, seed potatoes have to be put out.

About wo weeks ago I cut up seed potatoes to go through the chitting process. This is where you cut up the potato making sure each piece has an eye. Then you leave them in a cool dry place to heal and let the eye sprout more. This process helps with a vigorous growth and an abundant harvest according to our master gardener Mr. Raymond and his methods are backed by the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

Another Old Farmer’s Almanac and Mr. Raymond’s advice is to plant by the dark of the moon for root vegetables. So the old farmer’s tale says that the moon directs its energy towards the earth during the dark of the moon, good for root veggies and pulls the energy up during the light of the moon which is best for above ground veggies.

So, following the old and tried and true method, we will plant our potatoes next week which is 7 days into the dark of the moon 🌗.
