Today, it was all about the work. We worked hard. We had to fill in our second raised bed. Since the amount of good soil and funds are limited we’re filling the bottom up with the old beds that was invaded by weeds last year. It will be too deep for the weeds to grow out and it saves us from breaking our back from weeding. So we simply shovel in the soil with the weeds into our raised bed. Not that shoveling is easy but it’s alot better than weeding.

I know the no-dig method of gardening is popular but we tried it and it doesn’t work for us. The weeds grew right through the cardboard boxes or vined out from the bottom. The weeds even grew through a piece of carpet we placed on the cardboard to keep it from flying away. The mulch we put over the cardboard was not heavy enough and our funds were nonexistent to buy more. So we must dig. It won’t get rid of the weeds because there are likely seeds in the soil but it will give us a headstart to dig them away. As they say, steady wins the race!
