Workday #5

Workdays #3 and #4 were canceled due to rain and an illness. But we got back to work today and made some progress. We came back to see how all the rain made the grass grow in our raised bed and the beginnings of an anthill. There were also mushrooms.

I was concerned about the mushrooms. My initial thought was that they will help the soil because we do use mushroom compost, but then I got to wondering if they’re poisonous! So I looked them up and found that they will not harm any plants and will help to break down any organic matter in the soil. Too much rain and heat brought out these mushrooms.

I sprinkled some Sevin insecticide on the side that had ants. It’s suppose to be safe for veggies but I didn’t sprinkle to much because I’m squeamish about using any chemicals. We still had about six inches more of soil to fill in, so it should be ok.

While we are concentrating on this one raised bed there are weeds growing around us that once had beds too. Next workday we will have to use the weedeater. Our farmer consultant Mr. Partain of Bondurants (AceHardware) suggests we weedeat it now and let the weeds rot on the ground until spring since we won’t be using these beds now!
