Work Day #2

It’s 4th of July weekend and the ice machine station next to the old donut shop is out of order. That’s how my day started. The day is cloudy but a bit muggy this 7am! The clouds made it better to put in another 2 hours of work instead of a glaring sun, but the threat of rain was there!

Shelisa’s garden look!
Me, stomping down the clay layer!

Our raised bed had settled a good 6 to 8 inches during the week. I suspect the daily rain helped. So, Shelisa and I went to work and added another layer of peanut hay for drainage and added more topsoil on top.

Another workday and we’ll be finished with this bed and ready to plant. I consulted the garden calendar (see below) to see what we can still plant this mid summer. I thought it would be too late in the season to plant anything but found that it’s not. There’s still quite a bit of veggies that will grow now. So, we’ve decided to plant cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, and collard greens. It will be a little early for squash and greens but we want to make sure they will be ready by Thanksgiving!

But, a big but…….we won’t be planting anything until we have running water. There will not be any transporting water via buckets or unrolling and then rolling up 500 feet of hoses. Nevermore I say, like Poe’s raven. As I’ve already mentioned the town placed a water meter near the garden last spring before the pandemic started. We’ll have to see about getting a faucet connection, soon!
